Alessandro Canto, Quality Control Operator at the #LeonardoAeronautics site in Venegono (Varese, Italy), has turned a lifelong passion into a profession. During his childhood, he watched planes fly overhead near his home, close to Malpensa airport, wondering how such enormous, heavy objects could move so quickly through the sky. After earning a diploma in fixed-wing aircraft assembly from the ITS Academy in Somma Lombardo (Varese), Alessandro first connected with Leonardo six months before completing his course, in early 2023, through an internship at the Workshop Support Equipment and Final Assembly Line 346 at the Venegono site. Even before finishing at the ITS Academy, he was offered a job as an aircraft assembler – giving him the opportunity to do what he loves most: “getting my hands dirty and doing practical work,” such as installing avionics systems and assisting with functional avionics and electronic testing. Since May 2024, he has embarked on a new experience as a Quality Control Operator, working on certification tests for the #M345 aircraft, developed for basic and advanced training of military pilots from Italy and partner countries. A basketball enthusiast, Alessandro sees himself as someone still learning and growing – keen to absorb knowledge from more experienced Leonardo colleagues. #Leonardo has signed an agreement to acquire Iveco Defence, a division of the Iveco Group, for a total enterprise value of € 1.7 billion. The transaction will be financed through available cash resources. This strategic acquisition marks a significant step in Leonardo’s plan to strengthen its role as a leading, fully integrated Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) in the land defence domain. On July 23rd, the Italian Ambassador to Switzerland, Gian Lorenzo Cornado, visited the Kopter Group AG facility located in Mollis, an industrial site where the development and testing activities of Leonardo’s new-generation single-engine helicopter, the #AW09, take place. Welcomed by Marco Viola, CEO of the Swiss company controlled by #Leonardo, the Ambassador was able to appreciate the technological, industrial, and professional capabilities of this important industrial entity. Over the past five years, since its acquisition, Leonardo’s helicopter business has been able to embark on a path of further strengthening its already solid competitiveness in the international helicopter sector. The AW09 is the first new helicopter model in its category on the global market in over 50 years, characterised by, among other things, high digitalisation and strong attention to #sustainability, with more than 130 preliminary contracts already secured in the international market. The Ambassador witnessed once more the value of industrial synergies between Italy and Switzerland through Leonardo’s activities in a key industrial sector such as helicopters, which promote, among other things, mobility, social utility tasks such as rescue and firefighting, aerial work, and security.
